Do we like Kevin Rudd?

Our score: 6 out of 10. Decent on the causes that matter to us, with an old contested position on marriage and a long-disputed record as a boss.

Before politics Rudd was a career diplomat, with postings in Stockholm and Beijing. He won the 2007 election, ratified the Kyoto Protocol soon after, and in 2008 stood in parliament and apologised to the Stolen Generations. That apology is still the thing most people remember him for, and it's a big tick.

The wheels came off in 2009 and 2010. The Utegate scandal hit, the emissions trading scheme was defeated in parliament, and the Copenhagen climate summit failed. In June 2010 Julia Gillard challenged him for the leadership, and the bloke who talked about climate as a moral cause got turfed before he could deliver it.

The staff stories are the stain. Former health minister Nicola Roxon said he was “abusive to public servants and dismissive of their work”, and Julia Gillard alleged on the ABC's The Killing Season that he bullied and intimidated her. Rudd called her account “utterly false”, and former Treasury boss Ken Henry defended him, so it's contested rather than proven.

On the harm check, the record is clean in his own words. In 2013 he wrote that he now backed same-sex marriage and said religious institutions should be exempt. That reversed an earlier position, and They Vote For You shows him generally voting against marriage equality over his career. The same record has him consistently voting for reproductive autonomy and almost always for a carbon price and renewable investment. I found nothing from him on trans rights either way, and no slide into conspiracy theories.

The recent drama was the ambassadorship. At a televised White House meeting in October 2025 Trump said he didn't like Rudd, over harsh online comments Rudd had made about him before taking the job and later deleted. Opposition leader Sussan Ley called his position untenable, then backed off, while Albanese praised him as an outstanding representative. In January 2026 he announced he was leaving a year early, and Albanese said that was entirely Rudd's decision.

He's also a man who fights back, and wins more than he loses. Peta Credlin apologised on air in 2021 and admitted her claim that his Murdoch royal commission petition was a data harvesting exercise was false, as part of a defamation settlement. AAP FactCheck, though, rated his own 2022 claim about debt and deficits as mostly false. Social posts claiming USAID paid him were rated false by Check Your Fact.
