Do we like Keira Knightley?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and no harmful words of her own turned up, but one contested answer on the Harry Potter boycott keeps her off the top shelf.
Keira Knightley is an English actress with a long screen career. This month she is back on the London stage in a new adaptation of The Lives of Others, playing an actress watched by the Stasi in 1984 East Berlin. She was made an OBE in 2018, reported as being for services to drama and charity. I couldn't open a full profile, so I'll skip the potted career history rather than guess at it.
The story that matters for this page is from October 2025. She voices Professor Umbridge in Audible's full-cast Harry Potter audiobooks. Decider asked her about fans boycotting the franchise over J.K. Rowling's comments on trans people. She answered “I was not aware of that, no. I'm very sorry,” and added “I hope that we can all find respect.”
Reaction split. The A.V. Club's writer called the line about respect a false equivalence, given Rowling's wealth and influence, and described Rowling's activity as a campaign against trans people. Fox News noted she gave no sign she would join the boycott. HBO's spokesperson said Rowling has a right to express her personal views. Rowling is an executive producer on the network's upcoming Harry Potter series.
On the harm test, the record I found is thin. There are no words from her attacking trans people or anyone else, and no campaigning on any harmful cause. What's contested is that she took the Umbridge job and, when asked, didn't condemn Rowling. The A.V. Club's author read her comments as suggesting that knowing about the boycott wouldn't have changed her decision. That's his reading, not hers, and it is why this is an asterisk and not a clean pass.
Nothing new has surfaced on her lately beyond work news. The West End run is the headline, with Luke Thompson and Stephen Dillane in the cast and Sonia Friedman Productions behind it. There are no recent accusations against her in the pages I read, and I found no stoush with co-stars or crew.
On the good stuff, the OBE in 2018 is the firm one I could source. Other charity work, including campaigns for Women's Aid and Oxfam, turned up in search results. I couldn't open those pages, so I'm not leaning on them here. That's honestly the whole list from what I could confirm.
