Do we like Kaylee McKeown?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record and a decent public profile, but not much on the page about causes or other people, so we stop short of the top end.
McKeown is the backstroke queen of her generation. She won the 100m and 200m backstroke at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, and at Paris she became only the second woman to successfully defend the 100m backstroke title. Her father Sholto died in 2020, and she has made him the heart of her story, saying at Paris “I have a little bit of a superpower and that's my Dad”.
Her best-known stoush is a sporting one. At the 2025 Australian trials in Adelaide she was disqualified from a 50m backstroke heat, then reinstated after a protest when officials accepted she had been distracted by movement behind her block. She raced the final that night, and later posted that “at no point was I shown any favouritism”. Where you land probably depends on how you feel about swimming's rulebook, but it is a sports row, not a character one.
On the harm check, we looked for anything on LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and for the company she keeps. Nothing came up: no harmful posts, no culture-war grievance, no slide into conspiracy talk. The honest caveat is that she is an athlete who mostly keeps to swimming, so the record is quiet rather than loud. Her main commercial partner in the reporting is a sportswear brand, Under Armour.
The recent news is mostly about her calendar. She withdrew from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Pan Pacific Championships in July, explaining her reasons in a Swimming Australia statement, and she is aiming at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In August she was announced as the face of Under Armour's women's training range across the Pacific, on a deal running through LA 2028.
On the good-stuff side, her record is mostly on the pool deck: two Olympics, a double-double of backstroke golds and a lot of fans who love how openly she talks about her dad. We did not find verified charity work or advocacy that we could source, so we are not going to invent any. That is why this is a solid pass rather than a gushing one.
So, would we support her? Yes. There is no sign of cruelty, grievance or dodgy mates, and nothing in the court or allegation search either. The thin spot is that she has not used her platform much for other people that we could find, which is why she sits at a 7, not a 10.
