Do we like Kathryn Bernardo?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record with a long run of relief work, but she's said little on public issues, so there's less to go on than for a vocal ally.
Kathryn Bernardo has been on screen since she was a kid, and she's now one of the biggest names in Philippine entertainment. She broke through as a young lead in the 2010 remake of Mara Clara, and later became a box office draw for Star Magic and ABS-CBN.
The peak so far is Hello, Love, Again with Alden Richards in 2024, which became the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time. Last year she joined Pilipinas Got Talent as a judge, and this July her Madame Tussauds Hong Kong wax figure was unveiled in Makati.
The harm check comes up empty. We found no harmful words or acts of her own about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet. The nasty material is made up: a fabricated quote had her slamming President Marcos Jr over a Cebu typhoon response, and a fact-check found she never said it. Star Magic put out a statement, and she reshared it on her Instagram Stories.
The fair knock is silence. After an influence award in October 2025, some netizens complained that she hadn't spoken on corruption scandals, and that's commentary rather than anything she said. We couldn't confirm any LGBTQ+ statements from her, so she passes on a clean sheet and no extra credit. Her company is mainstream, with no Daily Wire-style studios or culture-war grifters in her recent projects.
The recent noise is gossip. In late July and early August, entertainment sites ran stories about her love life, and some netizens criticised her over them. The Daily Tribune piece quotes no named critic, and nothing from her. That's tabloid territory, and it tells us nothing about her character.
On the nice side, she has a long record of showing up. Reports say she and then co-star Daniel Padilla handed out relief goods to Taal evacuees in 2020. Hello, Love, Again pledged part of its profits to typhoon victims in 2024. Her comeback show Someone, Someday, with James Reid and Maja Salvador, was the most-watched show on Netflix Philippines within 12 hours.
