Do we like Kate Winslet?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of backing same-sex love stories and speaking up for women, with one contested film narration and a public apology for past work.
Kate Winslet grew up in Reading, the daughter of two actors and granddaughter of two theatre managers. She was in a cereal ad at seven and left school around sixteen to act. Heavenly Creatures in 1994 was her film debut, and Titanic made her a global name.
The Oscar came for The Reader. She has since kept working steadily across film and TV, and this year she has been busy behind the camera too. Goodbye June, her first film as director, hit Netflix on Christmas Eve 2025 with Helen Mirren and Timothy Spall in the cast, and one reviewer rated it highly.
On the harm check, nothing nasty turned up in her own words. In a December 2025 podcast interview she said some of her first intimate experiences as a young teen were with girls. PinkNews also reports she told Attitude she loves and champions same-sex love stories, and she played Mary Anning in Ammonite. I found nothing from her either way on trans issues, so that's a gap, not a tick.
The contested bit is Eleven Days in May, a documentary about Palestinian children killed in the 2021 Gaza conflict, which she narrated. Critics, including StandWithUs Israel, called it one-sided and objected to its co-director's background. She said she never meant to take a side: “War is a tragedy for all sides.” Where you land depends on whether you read it as a humanitarian gig or a political one.
She also worked with Woody Allen on Wonder Wheel (2017) and Roman Polanski on Carnage (2011). In a 2020 Vanity Fair interview she said she regretted it. Allen denies accusations that he molested his adopted daughter, and Polanski pleaded guilty in a case involving a 13-year-old girl. She said: “I have to take responsibility for the fact that I worked with them both.”
The recent thing is mostly career news. Deadline reported in March 2026 that she is the female lead in The Hunt for Gollum, with Andy Serkis directing and Peter Jackson co-producing. In June 2025 she also left the Hulu and A24 series The Spot, reportedly over creative differences. Neither says anything about her character.
