Do we like Karol G?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent and on the right side, with one lyric she apologised for and a fairly thin public record on some issues.
Carolina Giraldo from Medellín, Colombia, is the name she gave a Coachella crowd in April 2026, when she became the first Latina woman to headline the festival. She said it felt late, which tells you something about how long the door stayed shut. That line, from a girl in Medellín to the main stage in the desert, is basically her whole story.
She has had two big copyright stoushes, and she won both. A Florida federal judge threw out a US$50 million claim over the Tiësto collab “Don't Be Shy”, finding no direct evidence of copying. Then producers who accused her of lifting “Gatúbela” dropped their suit in 2026 and filed an apology saying “We were wrong”, with no settlement money paid.
The messier moment was “+57” in 2024. Critics, and Colombia's family welfare institute, accused the song of sexualising minors through one verse. She apologised on Instagram, said the lyrics were taken out of context, and said she accepted responsibility and still had a lot to learn. That's a real mark, but she owned it quickly rather than doubling down.
On the harm check, we found nothing hateful in her own words and nothing about her choosing dodgy company. In 2022 she turned up at Madrid's LGBTQ+ Pride on a pink float, in rainbow wings, and sang her hits to thousands. We found nothing from her on climate or vaccines either way, so that part of the record is thin.
The recent political moment is her Coachella set. Before it she told Playboy that people close to her had urged her not to comment on ICE, because of what it might mean for her visa. On stage she said “This is not just about me, this is about my Latino community” and told fans not to feel fear but pride. Where you land depends on whether you wanted her to say “ICE Out” outright or reckon she picked a smarter way to say it.
The good stuff is concrete. Her Con Cora Foundation, which she leads and which works with women and girls, gave more than US$1 million to earthquake relief in Colombia in August 2026, announced on air as US$1.2 million. She did it from a stadium tour stop in Los Angeles rather than skipping the event. Fans love her for that kind of showing up as much as for the hits.
