Do we like Karina?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record on harm and a decent one on kindness, held back only because the public record is thin on what she stands for.

Karina, born Yu Ji-min, is the leader of aespa, the SM Entertainment group that debuted in November 2020. SM introduced her as a versatile all-rounder who can handle main vocals, rap and dance, and fans said she had trained with the company for years before that. She has been one of the faces of the group ever since.

The one real stoush came in May 2025, a week before South Korea's presidential election. She posted a photo in a black-and-red jacket with a big number 2, and netizens linked it to the conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo, whose ballot number was 2. She deleted it, apologised to fans on Bubble, and SM said it was everyday content with no specific intent.

Weeks later she explained herself on a YouTuber's channel. She said she had no political intent and was simply ignorant of what the jacket signalled, and that the hardest part was seeing her bandmates cop the fallout. That reads as a young star who messed up and owned it, not someone pushing a line, but where you land depends on whether you buy that she didn't know.

On the harm check, honestly, there isn't much to find. No anti-LGBTQ+ comments, no conspiracy talk, no climate denial or dodgy collaborators turned up in my searches. The only thing near it is the jacket, and by her own account that wasn't a statement. The caveat is that K-pop idols are carefully managed and rarely speak on issues, so the silence tells you less than it would for a politician or a podcaster.

She has also been on the receiving end of ugly abuse. In June 2026 the Daegu High Court sentenced the creator of sexual deepfakes of her and Winter, who also sold them, to two years and six months in prison. SM said investigations are underway and that most perpetrators have been identified, so more cases are likely.

On the good stuff, in March 2025 she gave 100 million won (about $75,000) through the Hope Bridge disaster relief association, half for firefighter support and half for wildfire recovery after the huge fires in the south-east. That's a real gift, not a photo-op. In a 2026 ELLE Korea interview she described strength as having convictions that don't easily shake, which is a nice line even if it tells us little about her politics.
