Do we like Jung Ho-yeon?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and no scandals on record, but little documented public advocacy or charity, so it is a hopeful 6 rather than a rave.
Jung Ho-yeon, or HoYeon Jung in the West, started out as a model. Korean coverage says she began in 2010 through Korea's Next Top Model and walked New York Fashion Week in 2016. Then Squid Game made her a global name in 2021, in what was her acting debut as the defector Kang Sae-byeok.
The rise was fast. Vogue made her the first East Asian to appear solo on its cover in 130 years, and she said “My entire life changed in just one month.” She signed with the US agency CAA in late 2021, and Louis Vuitton named her a global ambassador.
Her trophy shelf is real. In February 2022 she won the Screen Actors Guild award for best female actor in a drama series, a first for a Korean actor in that category. That is a proper career peak for someone whose first acting job was a Netflix hit.
On the good-person side, there are no lawsuits, court outcomes or allegations against her in the reporting we could open. Her advice to younger women in a 2022 interview was to “look around their surroundings more”. That is kind enough, but it is no great act of courage. We found no verified charity work, and some low-quality websites claim otherwise without sources, so we left those out.
The recent news is a good one. She appeared on stage at the World Cup final with tennis star Carlos Alcaraz for the trophy ceremony, as a Louis Vuitton ambassador. Korean outlets say she was the first Korean actor to take part in an official event at a World Cup final. Meanwhile HOPE, Na Hong-jin's sci-fi thriller, passed 3 million tickets in Korea.
She also says she gained muscle and did her own rifle action for the film, and that Na's relentless shooting style, including a scene of more than 18 takes, was hard going. That reads like a hard worker who respects her crew, though it is her own account of the shoot.
