Do we like John Legend?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A long record of backing causes for others and nothing nasty on file, held back from a 9 only because the record on trans issues in particular is thin.
Legend was born John Roger Stephens in Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. His grandmother taught him piano, he sang in the church choir, and he went to the University of Pennsylvania. He then worked as a management consultant while playing New York nightclubs at night.
The big break came through Kanye West, who executive-produced his 2004 debut, Get Lifted. That album went platinum and won three Grammys. By 2018 he had joined the EGOT club, the youngest person and first Black man to do it, per Biography.com.
On the harm check, nothing nasty turned up. In 2015 he skipped a pre-Grammys party at a hotel owned by Brunei's sultan, and his representative called the sultan's anti-women and anti-LGBT laws “heinous”. His 2014 video for You & I featured 63 women of different body types and backgrounds, including Laverne Cox. In 2024 he told CNN his “default stance is to believe women”, calling what Sean Combs was accused of “shameful”. The gap is that we found no recent statement of his on trans rights in particular.
Politically he is loud about Trump. In October 2026 he said, “He already knows we hate him.” That's a very public feud, not a harm test fail. Criticising a politician, even bluntly, isn't punching down. Where you land on his tone depends on how you feel about Trump.
The good stuff is real. He founded the Show Me Campaign in 2007 after reading Jeffrey Sachs on global poverty, supporting a Tanzanian village and pushing education reform at home. BET gave him its Humanitarian Award in 2010. He has also backed criminal justice reform for years, telling Mic in 2018 that formerly incarcerated people are “our family members”.
On the court record, the only matters we found are small and old. He was a witness in Drew Dixon's case against L.A. Reid, which Reid settled on the eve of trial in January 2026. A 2011 copyright claim over one of his songs was reportedly settled. There are no allegations against Legend himself.
