Do we like Jewel Staite?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record, a charity campaign and warm words about crews, but there's little on the record about her views, so we can't go higher.
Jewel Staite was born in White Rock, British Columbia, and raised in Vancouver. She's best known as Kaylee Frye, the sunny mechanic on Firefly, a show that got cancelled and then refused to die. Since then she's been a mainstay of Canadian and sci-fi TV, including Stargate Atlantis.
The recent news is the good kind. After a week of teasing, Fillion revealed in March 2026 that the Firefly cast is developing an animated series set between the TV run and the film Serenity, with Staite among those expected to return. She's also been on Family Law as Abby Bianchi, a lawyer with her life in pieces, which ran a fourth season in Canada from January 2026.
Harm check first, and it comes up clean. We found no statements from her on trans people, women, vaccines, climate or politics, harmful or otherwise. Her recent work is Family Law and a recurring FBI agent role on Resident Alien in 2025, plus the Firefly reunion, and none of that is a red flag. The honest caveat is that silence isn't the same as a ringing endorsement.
On the good-person test, there are no lawsuits, allegations or court cases in anything we read. Nothing about her suggests a bully. In a 2024 interview she said whoever's at the top sets the tone, and that humour, gratitude and kindness spread from there. She credited Fillion with teaching her much of that.
The real good stuff is small but genuine. In 2017 she launched a shirt campaign with Stands.com to raise money for the SickKids Foundation, calling it a “wonderful organization”. Fans at Dragon Con have also described her as warm and happy to chat, and she's talked about how much Kaylee's openness meant to her.
She's also got a sense of humour about the industry. Back in 2008 she joked to Gizmodo about her Stargate character being tied up and kidnapped all the time, with no grumbling and no ego. Light stuff, but it tells you something.
