Do we like Jeremy Rockliff?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Thin rather than bad: plenty of political stoushes on record, but not enough verified here on harm or character to push the score either way.

Jeremy Rockliff became Tasmania's premier in April 2022, when the Liberals installed him after Peter Gutwein's exit. He has been the face of the state government ever since, through a minority parliament that has made life awkward for him.

The big stoush came in June 2025, when Labor leader Dean Winter's no-confidence motion passed 18 to 17 with the Greens and three crossbenchers behind it. Rockliff refused to resign and said he would seek an early election instead, which the Governor granted.

The trouble hasn't stopped. In 2026 the Premier's own releases show Madeleine Ogilvie moving to the backbench on 30 May and Jane Howlett resigning her ministerial responsibilities on 16 June. Reports I saw tie both exits to disputes with the state's Integrity Commission, but I couldn't open those pages to check, so I'm leaving the detail out.

On policy, his office has put out statements on the Macquarie Point precinct (April 2025), a proposed independent review of the Integrity Commission (February 2025) and forestry (November 2025, framed by his government as a fight against a Labor-Greens deal). Those are the government's framing, and where you land on the stadium and native forest logging depends on how you weigh jobs and spending against the budget and the climate.

The harm check is the gap. Search snippets suggested he has backed a ban on conversion practices, though advocates criticised how the bill was drafted, but I couldn't open anything to confirm it, so I won't score him on it. Nothing here is a pass or a fail, and it's worth checking again once the pages open.
