Do we like Jay Baruchel?

Our score: 7 out of 10. No harmful words or acts turned up and no court or misconduct trouble, but the evidence of real good beyond his career and Canadian-culture advocacy is thin.

Jay Baruchel was born in Ottawa in 1982 and raised in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, with an antiques-dealer dad and a freelance-writer mum. He studied theatre at a Montreal arts school and was acting professionally by 12. He's fluently bilingual, which matters for the Canadian-identity fights he keeps wading into.

The career arc is the classic gangly-sidekick-turned-leading-man story. Almost Famous, the sitcom Undeclared, then Million Dollar Baby got him noticed internationally. Knocked Up and the voice of Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon followed, and he won an Annie Award for that voice work.

He also built his own thing at home: he co-wrote and starred in the hockey comedy Goon, then made his directing debut with the sequel. He's a Habs obsessive who wrote a book about being a fan, and he leans hard into Canadian pride. He told The Hockey News he was raised to see Canada as “the best country in the world.”

Now the harm check. We searched his name against LGBTQ+ and trans issues, women, climate, racism, migrants and Trump, and found no harmful statements, campaigns, donations or endorsements from him. His recent credits turned up nothing dodgy either: a comedy called The Stunt Driver and the indie Mile End Kicks, with no sign of him repeatedly working with people who push harm. Silence isn't a gold star, but it's a clean sheet.

Scandal-wise there's honestly not much. We found no lawsuits, convictions or allegations against him. The nearest thing to a stoush was fan chatter about how he got on with a co-star on This Is the End, and the piece we opened didn't carry his actual words, so we're leaving that alone.

The most recent professional wobble was in mid-2025, when he left the Reacher season four cast, reportedly for a personal matter, per Deadline as relayed by TVLine, and was replaced. Neither he nor the show said more in that piece, so there's nothing to judge there. In February 2026 he turned up on Canadaland talking about where the Elbows Up movement goes next. We don't have a transcript, so we can't say more than that.
