Do we like Jared Leto?

Our score: 3 out of 10. A lot of women have made serious allegations he denies, nothing has been tested in court, and the good I could verify is mostly career achievements.

Leto was born in Bossier City, Louisiana, and raised by his mother, a travelling artist, in a family that was short on money but big on creativity. He studied painting, then filmmaking in New York, and broke through as heartthrob Jordan Catalano on My So-Called Life in the mid-90s. From there it was Fight Club, American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream, plus a band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, started with his brother in 1998.

The trouble goes back to June 2025, when Air Mail published a story in which nine women alleged inappropriate behaviour over the years, with some saying they were teenagers at the time. One woman said that at 16 he approached her outside a Los Angeles café and later phoned her repeatedly, and a model alleged he pursued her at 16. His representatives expressly denied everything and said there was never any recruiting or impropriety.

Then came the BBC. Its documentary Jared Leto: Hollywood's Dark Secret, out on 29 July 2026, includes four women who allege he sexually assaulted or behaved sexually inappropriately towards them as teenagers between 2002 and 2016. The BBC says it corroborated their accounts; the AP couldn't independently verify them. Leto's statement was blunt: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life.” No charges or civil suits had been reported in the coverage I read.

On the harm test, I found no words of his attacking LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate. He did cop criticism for playing a trans woman in Dallas Buyers Club, with critics arguing the part should have gone to a trans actor. In 2024 Ukraine's foreign ministry called his talk of Russian energy and a future Moscow gig an “insult to those sacrificing their lives to defend freedom”. His reaction wasn't in the coverage I read.

The latest wrinkle is career fallout. The Daily Beast, relaying Page Six, reports he lost a starring role in Barry Levinson's film Assassination as the allegation chatter grew. That's secondhand, and no studio statement appeared in the piece, so treat it as reported, not confirmed.

On the good stuff, the verified record is mostly career: a best supporting actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club and more than two decades fronting a rock band. Search results hinted at charity auctions and donations, but I couldn't open a reliable page to confirm them, so I'm leaving them out. That's honestly the thin part of this file.
