Do we like James Rodríguez?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and real giving with no harmful words found, but the coverage is mostly football and thin on his views.
James Rodríguez burst onto the world stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals in five matches and won the Golden Boot. He debuted for Colombia in October 2011 and finished with 31 goals in 131 games, per the Associated Press.
Later he captained Colombia to the 2024 Copa América final, the country's first final in 23 years, and played at the 2018 and 2026 World Cups. In September he announced he was closing the chapter, saying he left with peace of mind because he gave absolutely everything.
Off the pitch, a Spanish tax dispute dating to his 2014 move to Real Madrid ended in April when Spain's National Court ruled in his favour and ordered more than €3 million returned to him. Separately, a citizen filed a Bogotá court action in June against him, Luis Díaz and the federation over an AI-made image, accusing them of “traición a la patria”. Experts said admission of the case doesn't mean it will succeed.
The harm check: we searched for anything on LGBTQ+ people, women, race, migrants or the climate and came up empty, with no harmful words or campaigns of his own. That is a gap in the record as much as a clean sheet, so call it a pass on what we could find.
The good stuff: in September he gave 150 million Colombian pesos from his JR10 Legend collection to his Colombia Somos Todos foundation for families hit by the earthquake. He posted that “estar presentes y sumar puede hacer la diferencia”. It fits a pattern, with the foundation also running youth programs.
