Do we like Jackson Wang?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and real generosity, with one contested political stance and no harmful words about any group found.

Jackson Wang grew up in Hong Kong around fencing, and he still calls it his root. He swapped the sabre for the stage and ended up in GOT7, then went solo with his own label, Team Wang. These days he's a global pop name with a world tour behind him.

The story that follows him around is politics. In August 2019, during the Hong Kong protests, he posted a Chinese flag on Weibo and called himself one of 1.4 billion guardians of the flag. A fan in Hong Kong told the AP he values the China market more than Hong Kong's. 88rising then dropped him from a Los Angeles festival, and the reason was never confirmed.

He doubled down in January 2023 at a London show, where he called overseas media coverage of China propaganda and said a visit would make you think it's a dope place. Fans praised it, and his critics heard a performer dismissing real concerns. The same report notes he also ended his Adidas deal over Xinjiang cotton concerns. Where you land depends on whether you read it as patriotism or as brushing off a human rights row.

Now the harm check, properly. We found no remarks about LGBTQ+ people, trans people or women, and nothing on climate or vaccines. The main thing against him is that political line, which is a contested position and not a campaign against a group. In April 2025 viewers accused him of saying a racial slur on a podcast show. The studio, DIVE Studios, called that misleading and released unedited footage that it says shows him saying “brother”.

On the good stuff, Wang and his label Team Wang gave HK$1 million to Tung Wah Hospital after the deadly Tai Po fire in late 2025, and he shared evacuation centre info with followers. In 2026 he became the fencing federation's first global ambassador and said he wants to bring the sport to a new generation. That's a real platform used for other people.

Lately he's been steady, not messy. He's signed to Roc Nation, working on a new album, and says he'd love to bring a tour home to Hong Kong. Asked about gossip, he said not every single thing needs a response. He's also candid about his music, calling his last album “definitely self-serving” and something he needed to make.
