Do we like J-Hope?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of big, quiet giving and no harmful words of his own turned up, with one contested photo from August to weigh against it.

J-Hope is Jung Ho-seok, the dancer-turned-rapper in BTS, and his school ties to Gwangju still show up in his giving. He keeps funding scholarships at his old high school there, which says plenty about where he sees himself coming from.

He did his compulsory military service like the rest of the band, enlisting in 2023 and walking out of the Wonju base in October 2024 after 18 months. He saluted the press and about 100 fans, and bandmate Jin turned up with a bouquet. It's a low-drama chapter, which is the point.

On harm, the record is quiet. The group spoke out against anti-Asian hate crimes at the White House in 2022, where J-Hope's own turn was thanking fans of every nationality, culture and language. We found no anti-LGBTQ+ or anti-women comments from him, no conspiracy-theory slide and no climate denial, though we also found no solo statements on those topics, so that's honestly a thin file.

The fresh mess is August's Chris Brown photo. Brown shared a picture with J-Hope and RM after they went to his tour, and some fans, including women who said they'd been abused, said it changed how they saw the band. Brown has a 2009 assault conviction involving Rihanna. Defenders say fans are allowed to enjoy a gig, and neither member has said anything publicly that the coverage showed. It's one photo, not a pattern, but it's why this isn't a clean pass.

The good stuff is the real stuff. For his birthday in February he gave 350 million won: 200 million to the children's hospital at Asan Medical Center, 100 million via ChildFund Korea for scholarships at two Gwangju-area schools, and 50 million from a charity event to two animal rights groups. He said he was happy to make the donations in time for his birthday, and credited the fans for making them possible.

So: would we support him? Yes. He's a long-running giver with a clean harm record, and the Chris Brown photo is worth watching rather than worth cancelling him over. If he says something about it, or keeps hanging with Brown, we'll revisit.
