Do we like Imran Ahmad Khan?
Our score: 0 out of 10. A court convicted him of sexually assaulting a teenager and he lost his appeal, so nothing else on the record can lift the score.
Imran Ahmad Khan won Wakefield for the Conservatives in 2019, taking a Labour seat that had been red for decades. He came in as a last-minute candidate and was pitched as a counter-terrorism expert. His career peaked early, and then it went very badly wrong.
Within days of his win, Tory-linked reports called him an openly gay Muslim MP, after an application was made in his name to an LGBT+ candidates' fund. The party said the application was made in error, and he said he was not an out LGBT MP. That's a messy start rather than a scandal, but it stuck to him.
He appealed against the conviction and lost in December 2022. The Court of Appeal found the trial was fair and the conviction was safe. Earlier, former Tory minister Crispin Blunt had questioned the conviction. That drew heavy criticism, and Blunt later withdrew his comments.
On the harm test, we found no statements of his own against LGBTQ+ people, women or migrants, and no sign of conspiracy theories. We should be honest that the search was thin. We found nothing recent on his work, the company he keeps, or any good works to set against the conviction. That's the whole list.
