Do we like Iga Świątek?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent record, a lot of generosity toward others, and one contested doping case that investigators found came from contamination.

Świątek is the Warsaw-born tennis star who became the first Pole to win a Wimbledon singles title, in 2025, when she beat Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in under an hour. Her father was an Olympic rower, so elite sport ran in the house. After the win she was gracious to the loser, telling Anisimova she should be proud and that she hoped they'd play many more finals there.

The big stoush on her record came in 2024, when she tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine. The ITIA accepted that a contaminated over-the-counter melatonin product made in Poland was the source and that the breach wasn't intentional. She accepted a one-month suspension and gave up her Cincinnati prize money, and WADA said it would review the decision. Her own verdict was that the uncertainty was the worst part.

The case didn't drag on. Poland's anti-doping agency chose not to appeal the one-month ban, saying the ITIA's decision matched the rules, and the suspension ended in December 2024. Some rivals and fans were still sniping about it later, so expect that noise to follow her, but the ruling itself is on the record.

On the harm check, we found no words or acts from her that hurt LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet. What we did find is her backing Ukraine since 2022, including a push for more support for Ukrainian players. We found nothing from her on climate or LGBTQ+ topics either way, so that gap is worth being upfront about.

She also spoke up when it cost her something. In 2022 she said she couldn't stay silent after an MP accused the head of the Polish Tennis Association of sexually abusing her as a teenager. He called the allegations ungrounded and said they were part of a political fight, and the article doesn't report any outcome. Świątek's contribution was to say that the governing bodies should determine what happened.

The good stuff is real. In July 2022 she organised a charity exhibition in Kraków that raised about two million zloty for children affected by the war in Ukraine, with money going to United24, UNICEF Poland and Elina Svitolina's foundation. She also played against a Ukrainian star at that event, which is a decent way to back up what she says.
