Do we like Helen Mirren?

Our score: 8 out of 10. A long, decent record with good words on trans women and charity work, and one position on Israel that splits people.

Helen Mirren was born in London in 1945 to an English mother and a Russian father from an exiled noble family. She was in school plays early, played Cleopatra at the National Youth Theatre at 20, and that caught the Royal Shakespeare Company's eye. From there it was The Long Good Friday, three BAFTA TV wins for Prime Suspect and an Oscar for playing the Queen.

The recent story is a nasty one for her. Footage that went online in May 2026 shows a man swearing at her in London over her support for Israel while she walked with her husband, film director Taylor Hackford. The clip was filmed around the end of 2025. The Met said it was reviewing it and trying to reach her, then closed the case without a formal investigation after speaking with the couple.

Her reply was the interesting bit. At the Taormina Film Festival she said the man was “maybe a little over passionate” and suggested he'd got the wrong end of something online. She also said “Evil forces are rising everywhere, even in a country like Israel”, and questioned Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Back in 2023 she said “I believe in Israel because of the Holocaust”, and she is reported to have condemned the 7 October attack. Where you land depends on whether you read her as a loyal friend of Israel or as someone willing to criticise its government.

On the harm check, the record we found is clean on the things this page cares about. In a 2019 Radio Times interview she said she's not a TERF and that trans women are women, as PinkNews reported. We found nothing on climate either way, and no harmful words or dodgy company turned up in our searches. That's honestly a short list on the planet side.

There was a bit of 2026 set gossip too. Puck's newsletter reported trouble between her MobLand co-star Tom Hardy and the production, and Variety pushed back, saying he hadn't been fired and there was no friction with Mirren. She posted a photo of Hardy on Instagram captioned “Love you now and always.” It's industry chatter, not a finding, and the one person who matters has answered it warmly.

The good stuff is real. She is a patron of Refuge, the domestic violence charity, and in 2016 urged people to join its march as an act of protest. She backed it with plain words about supporting women and children who live through domestic violence. Add decades of work and honours from stage and screen, and that's a platform used for more than trophies.
