Do we like Harry Kane?
Our score: 8 out of 10. No harmful words or acts turned up, a mental health foundation to his name, and a record that is thinner than most on the personal side.
Kane is the England captain and Bayern Munich's goalscorer-in-chief. Last season he scored 73 goals for club and country, which Al Jazeera notes is the highest tally since Lionel Messi's record year in 2011-12, and he captained England to third place at the 2026 World Cup. He called it “by far, the best season of my life”.
The latest news is the big one. On 26 October at the London Palladium, Kane won the Ballon d'Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Lionel Messi. NPR reports he is the first Englishman to win it in 25 years, and his speech was about hard work rather than himself: “It's massive for England, for our country.”
On the harm test, the most useful episode is the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Before the tournament the FA said it would pay any fine if Kane wore the OneLove armband, and PinkNews reports he was determined to wear it. FIFA then threatened sporting sanctions, the FA and seven other European associations backed down, and Kane played in the approved armband instead. Where you land depends on whether you see a captain willing to take a booking or a team that folded, but the intent was on the right side.
The thing that might make you wince is golf. Kane confirmed during this year's World Cup that he played a round with Donald Trump in Florida about 18 months earlier, calling it a “pretty surreal experience”, and Trump praised him on Truth Social. That's a round of golf, not a policy position, and nothing in what I found has Kane endorsing, donating to or campaigning for anyone. I found no harmful comments about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet from him.
The good stuff is real. In 2022 he launched the Harry Kane Foundation on World Mental Health Day, aimed at making mental health conversations more routine and cutting stigma. Sky Sports reports that all public donations go to mental health charities, projects and research. His launch message was to “not be afraid to ask for help”.
On the good-person test, I searched for court outcomes, lawsuits and allegations and found nothing decided against him. The only results were old stoushes about whether he dived to win penalties, which he has denied. That's a thin file for a mate to weigh up, but a clean one, and the record we have is about football rather than character.
