Do we like Harry Dean Stanton?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decades of work, no harmful words or acts found, and warm tributes from colleagues; the record on his private views is thin.

Nothing new on him lately: he died in 2017, and the 2026 "news" floating around is recycled obituaries and a death-hoax page. So this is a look back at a whole career, not a fresh stoush.

He grew up in Kentucky, the son of a tobacco farmer and barber, and his parents split while he was in high school. In World War II he served in the Navy as a cook on a landing ship at the Battle of Okinawa. After the war he studied journalism and radio arts at the University of Kentucky, caught the acting bug on stage there, and went off to the Pasadena Playhouse.

The career that followed was long and wonderfully odd. He started with small parts in westerns and TV like Gunsmoke and Bonanza, then turned up in Cool Hand Luke, The Godfather Part II, Alien, Repo Man and Pretty in Pink. His great role was Paris, Texas, and he kept working with David Lynch right through to Twin Peaks: The Return, plus a stint fronting his own band.

On the harm test, there's honestly not much to report. We found no anti-LGBTQ+ remarks, no conspiracy-theory slide, no political campaigning and no record of him platforming anyone who pushes harm. His last films, Lucky and Twin Peaks, were a quiet drama and a Lynch revival, not culture-war fodder. The catch is that he was famously reticent, so the absence of evidence is partly him being a man of few words.

On the good-person side, we found no court outcomes, no lawsuits and no credible allegations from established outlets. David Lynch called him “a great actor (actually beyond) -- and a great human being”, and said everyone loved him. That's a friend's tribute, not a deep audit, but it's consistent with a bloke who kept working with the same people for decades.

In his own words he was modest to the point of shrugging. He said “There are no small parts.” and talked up Kris Kristofferson as “a sweetheart and a great poet too.” In 2016 Vidiots, a Los Angeles film-library nonprofit, created an award in his name and held a fundraiser around it. He was scheduled to attend.
