Do we like Hannah Fry?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A clean record, a lot of public-spirited work and no harm found, but the record on LGBTQ+ topics is thin.
Hannah Fry is the maths professor who made numbers watchable. She studied maths at UCL, did a PhD in fluid dynamics, then moved into applying maths to cities and social systems. Around 2015 she took up stand-up comedy and a viral TED Talk, and it snowballed into TV, radio, books and podcasts.
She's now a fixture on telly and in your ears. She presented the three-part BBC Two series AI Confidential in early 2026, which looked at AI grief tech and companion chatbots and the harm that can follow. She also co-hosts The Rest Is Science, a video podcast with Michael Stevens, made by the Goalhanger podcast company and launched in November 2025.
Scandals? Honestly, there aren't any. Searches for court cases, lawsuits and allegations turned up nothing about her, and that's the whole list. The closest thing to a stoush was in January 2024, when a commenter said she was only seen as an expert for her looks after she posted about the austerity spreadsheet error. Followers accused him of misogyny, and she reposted it as her favourite tweet of all time.
On the harm test, nothing flagged. We found no anti-vax, climate-denial, grievance or culture-war material from her, and her projects of late are BBC and mainstream podcast work. She has said the gap for women in senior maths isn't about ability, and pointed to support structures built around men. The gap in the record is that we found nothing from her specifically on trans rights, so that part is thin rather than clean.
The recent bit is pure fun. On Celebrity Traitors she started as a Faithful, was recruited as a Traitor by James Acaster and Maya Jama, then got banished. Afterwards she said she'd studied past series and used the same technique that Alan Turing used on Enigma. She joked she would have made such a good Faithful.
So would we back her? Yes. She passes both tests on what we could find, with one caveat: this is a person with a very quiet public record on the culture-war stuff. If she ever says something nasty, it hasn't made the news.
