Do we like Gwendoline Christie?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record and a verified good cause, held back from higher because her public statements on trans rights, women's rights or the planet are thin.
Gwendoline Christie is the towering actress who played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. In a 2019 GQ Style interview, reported by Yahoo Life UK, she said her 6ft 3in frame draws strong reactions from people. She also said that before Brienne she hadn't expected to see women who looked like her in mainstream entertainment.
The nearest thing to a stoush we found is an awards-season one. In 2019 CBS News reported that HBO hadn't put her forward for an Emmy, so she submitted herself in the supporting actress category and landed a nomination. Hardly a scandal, more a woman backing herself when the studio didn't.
On the harm check, we went looking for anything she has said or done against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, and for any dodgy company. The sources we could open showed nothing. That is not the same as a loud track record of advocacy, and we can't tell you what she thinks about trans rights because we found no statement of hers on it.
What we can verify is a good cause. In 2020 she backed the campaign to save Prospect Cottage, the seaside home of filmmaker Derek Jarman, and asked the Culture Secretary to step in, the Evening Standard reported. By then more than £2.1 million of the £3.5 million target had been raised.
We also found no court outcomes and no allegations against her in established outlets. Plenty of low-quality gossip sites have been churning out 2026 rumours about her, and several flag their own stories as false, so we've ignored them. Nothing reliable and new turned up on her lately.
So the verdict is a yes, with a note on how much we know. Her record is clean and her one verified cause is a good one, but there's less on file than for someone who has put their name to causes again and again. If she speaks up on something bigger, we'll revisit.
