Do we like Goldie Hawn?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A decent record and a genuine ally, with one old Davos tweet she owned up to, though the public record on her wider politics is thin.
Goldie Hawn grew up in Washington, D.C., the daughter of a musician and an actress. She was in ballet and tap classes by three, and at 18 she left university to open her own ballet school before dancing professionally in New York and abroad.
The big break came with Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In from 1968 to 1970, which earned her two Emmy nominations. Then she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Cactus Flower. A decade later she produced and starred in Private Benjamin, which earned her another Oscar nomination, so she was running her own show well before it was common.
On the harm test, she comes out clean. In a 2017 interview she said she would stand up against injustice, including for LGBT people, and asked why anyone would chastise someone over love. She also recalled visiting gay friends during the AIDS crisis, saying she would get into bed with them just to be there.
There is one blemish. In 2014 she tweeted a photo of herself shaking hands with Nigeria's then-president at Davos, calling it “wonderful”, just after he'd signed a harsh anti-gay law. Followers pointed it out. She said the tweet “had every right to cause an uproar”, that she hadn't known his policies, and she apologised. It's a one-off blunder she owned straight away, not a pattern.
We found no court cases against her, and the only allegations in the coverage are ones she made herself about her own early career. We also found nothing on her views on vaccines, climate or migrants, and one tabloid piece about her and Kurt Russell disagreeing over politics rested on unnamed sources. We've left that out. So the record is clean but thin on those topics.
The recent news is quiet. She's been off screen for six years and told People it's all about the content, with a funny, well-written script the only thing likely to lure her back. Her next big thing is a children's book on kindness and mindfulness.
