Do we like Gerard Piqué?

Our score: 5 out of 10. No anti-LGBTQ+ words found and a thin record of good, against a fine, a ban and an open Saudi deal investigation.

Piqué is a former Barcelona defender who, after retiring from playing, went into business. These days he owns FC Andorra and runs the sports company Kosmos, which is behind the Kings League and the Queens League. So the question for us is less what he did on the pitch and more what he does with his name and money now.

The loudest story is the Saudi one. A Spanish judge is investigating suspicions of corruption and money laundering around the 2019 deal that took the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, and Piqué was questioned over it in March 2025. He has denied wrongdoing, and the case was still in its investigative phase when we last found reporting, with no 2026 ruling turning up. The judge can still shelve it or send it to trial, so it stays alleged.

Then there's May 2026. After Andorra's 1-0 loss to Albacete, the referee's report said he “shouted at match officials in a threatening manner”. The federation banned him for six matches and two months from official football activity. Reuters-style coverage carried no response from him or the club, so it's one side of the story.

The same month Spain's market regulator, the CNMV, fined him €200,000 for insider trading over a 2021 takeover. It said he bought shares in Aspy Global Services after reportedly learning of the takeover talks, and a businessman was fined €100,000 for allegedly passing him the information. The report we read doesn't include a response from Piqué, and the decision can be challenged in court.

On the harm check, we found nothing from him against LGBTQ+ people, women, climate science or vaccines, but the search was thin and mostly Spanish-language gossip. The blemish is April 2024, when he laughed off a singer's Bolivian shows on a Kings League stream and critics demanded an apology. That's a rude joke rather than a campaign, and the Saudi deal is a separate worry about who he does business with.

The good stuff is on the thin side. He was named a Laureus Sport for Good ambassador in 2021, which ties him to a sports-for-social-change charity. We didn't find charity work or acts of kindness beyond that, and we'd rather say so than pad it out.
