Do we like Gavin Robinson?
Our score: 4 out of 10. Decent reputation as a moderate, but the party he leads voted against LGBTQ+ measures and this check found little hard good or harm of his own.
Gavin Robinson is an East Belfast boy through and through. He went to Grosvenor Grammar, studied law and Irish politics at Queen's, and worked as a barrister before going full-time in politics. He's no relation to the earlier DUP leader Peter Robinson, so don't mix them up.
He was a Belfast city councillor and Lord Mayor of Belfast in 2012-13, then won the East Belfast seat at Westminster in 2015. He became deputy leader in 2023, and stepped in as interim leader in 2024 after Jeffrey Donaldson resigned following criminal charges. The Irish Times pegged him as being on the more moderate wing of the party, and a key ally of Donaldson in getting Stormont back up and running.
On the harm test, the picture is mixed. In 2019 his party opposed the Westminster amendments extending same-sex marriage and abortion rights to Northern Ireland; Robinson acted as a teller, so he didn't cast a vote himself, but he was working the party's side of it. In 2025 he called Kneecap's gigs a “hate fest”, which is a view about a band, not about a minority. We found nothing from him specifically on trans people, and no conspiracy-theory slide.
The recent stoush is Drumcree. Police say 60 suspects have been identified over the 12-day standoff at the Orange Order parade, and Sinn Féin leaders have been interviewed. Carla Lockhart resigned as a DUP party officer, and Robinson told the BBC he understood her position, saying “I don't want to see her go”. He's also demanded PSNI transparency on a claimed terror threat tied to the dispute. Reports of police looking at an earlier protest he attended in Dundonald turned up, but we couldn't open a source for it, so we've left it out.
On the good side of the ledger, he's been a steady pair of hands. He took over a party in turmoil, and the Irish Times called him one of the DUP's most capable representatives, well liked across the political spectrum. He argues for working with whoever holds power, and said in 2024 he'd see no reason to repeat the Stormont walkout. Beyond that, charity and personal kindness didn't show up in what we found.
So where does that land us? Robinson is no firebrand, and nothing we read shows him being cruel to anyone. But he leads a party that has stood against the LGBTQ+ measures this page cares about, and he was part of that fight in 2019. If you're after a champion, look elsewhere. If you're after a moderate unionist who's pleasant company, that bit checks out. We found no court record or serious allegations about him.
