Do we like Gary Valenciano?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decades of steady UNICEF work, a kind message to LGBTQ+ families and no harmful words found; the gaps are on climate and wider politics.

Gary V is the Filipino pop institution known as Mr. Pure Energy. He grew up in Manila with a Puerto Rican actress mother and a father named Vicente. He got his start in the collegiate group Kundirana at La Salle Greenhills, and singer Pilita Corrales spotted him and had him guest on her show. His breakthrough was Di Na Natuto in 1985, and he sold out the Araneta Coliseum for his 25th anniversary in 2008.

If you're after scandal, there's very little. The closest he came was a December 2024 concert at the Araneta that was cut short on the first night. He and his management apologised to fans who felt shortchanged and offered partial refunds. His team said it was the first time that had happened in his decades-long career. We found no court cases against him.

On the harm check, nothing nasty turned up on women, migrants or public health. On LGBTQ+ people, he spoke at a June 2023 UNICEF contract renewal timed to Pride Month and said God bless the entire community. He said he prays for parents of LGBTQ+ family members and urged families to talk and listen. He also cited a proverb about raising kids. Some readers may find the faith framing a bit old-school, but it was warm, and he campaigned against nobody. We found nothing from him either way on climate.

He's openly and deeply Christian, which is not a strike here. In February 2026 he was asked about Alvin Aragon's viral remarks on faith. He said he doesn't judge Aragon and would rather hear him out first. He also said his own faith has matured away from harsh judgment, since he was once a Christian “honeymooning with the Lord”. That's a decent sign of how he treats people he disagrees with.

On the recent politics, he hosts the podcast Unshaken, and Marcos was a guest in October. Gary said the First Lady had teased him about being maka-pink, meaning a supporter of Leni Robredo. The First Lady said different views are fine and the country is shared. In May he posted a prayer asking God to speak to every heart in the Senate during a tense standoff there. Where you land on the guests and the politics depends on your own views. What he actually did was host a civil conversation and pray for wisdom. His Inspired tour took him across North America this year.

The real good stuff is long-running. UNICEF appointed him its first Philippine National Ambassador in 1998, and he was still backing children's learning recovery in 2023. Since 2018 he has also held Face to Face dialogues with students, 58 of them by 2024. That's a long record of using the platform for other people.
