Do we like Gary Oldman?

Our score: 5 out of 10. A brilliant working actor with no pattern of harm found, held back by one bungled interview and an unproven allegation, with thin evidence of good works.

Oldman came up through the Royal Shakespeare Company before film made him a face you know everywhere. There was an Oscar for playing Churchill in Darkest Hour, the Dark Knight films, Harry Potter and now Slow Horses. King Charles knighted him in the June 2025 birthday honours, so it's Sir Gary these days.

The stain on his record is a 2014 Playboy interview. He railed against political correctness and defended Mel Gibson's drunken remarks about Jews, saying Gibson was in “a town that's run by Jews”. He also stood up for Alec Baldwin. The backlash was fierce, and he wrote an open letter to the Anti-Defamation League saying he was remorseful that his comments had offended many Jewish people.

On the harm check, the apology didn't mention Baldwin, and The Advocate noted it said nothing about LGBT people either. That's a real gap. Past that interview, our searches turned up nothing from him against trans or LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, and no run of dodgy company. One bad interview twelve years ago isn't a pattern, so it's an asterisk rather than a fail.

The other shadow is older. A 2001 court filing by his then-wife alleged he physically assaulted her. The Wrap reported that police did not pursue charges, and he has denied it, with his representative calling it a smear during a bitter custody fight. It resurfaced when he won his Oscar in 2018. With nothing decided in court, we can't say more than that it was alleged and denied.

Lately he's been busy and well reviewed. Time Out gave his turn in Krapp's Last Tape at the Royal Court in May 2026 high praise, calling it “bloody good”. He also directed and designed the production. On Slow Horses, he now says he did a play after talking retirement, so “we'll see what the future holds”.

On the good stuff, there's the knighthood and a handprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in August 2025, where co-stars turned up to speak for him. We found no clear record of charity work or causes he's put his name to. That's honestly the whole list, which is why this isn't a higher score.
