Do we like Frans Timmermans?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A long record on the right side of LGBTQ+ and women's rights, held back by one very contested remark about Israelis.

Frans Timmermans is a career Dutch politician and diplomat. He was foreign minister, then a heavyweight at the European Commission, and in 2023 he went home to lead the GroenLinks-PvdA left alliance into a Dutch election. This card leans on a thin set of dated pages I could actually open, so the early years get less colour than they deserve.

His big domestic gamble ended badly. After the 29 October 2025 election, D66 won and Timmermans said he would take responsibility for his alliance's losses and stepped down as leader. Jesse Klaver, his deputy, took over in early November 2025. Taking the blame rather than hanging on counts for something.

On the harm check, his best record is on LGBTQ+ rights. As a Commission vice-president he was part of the push in 2021 when Brussels launched legal action against Hungary and Poland over LGBTQ rights. Later, as a party leader in 2023, he warned about right-wing pushback against equal rights for women and LGBTQIA+ people. I found no anti-trans or anti-gay words from him.

Then there's July 2026. In an interview with De Morgen he said some right-wing Israelis use “exactly the same reasoning” as the Nazis, and that an entire people is being exterminated. The CJO wrote to Prime Minister Jetten, called the remarks antisemitic and asked that Timmermans give up his honorary Minister of State title. Editor Esther Voet argued the comparison fits the IHRA definition of antisemitism, depending on context. I found no response from Timmermans in what I read.

Where you land depends on how you read it. Critics hear a Nazi comparison aimed at Jews and Israel; he framed it as a comparison with some right-wing and far-right Israelis, not Israelis in general. Either way it is the sort of line that makes a lot of people flinch, and it is the one real stain here. It is also a statement, not a campaign.

On the rest of the record there's little to flag. I searched for court cases and lawsuits and found nothing against him. On the planet side, his name is tied to the EU Green Deal, but I couldn't open a dated source to detail it here, so I'm not scoring it beyond that.
