Do we like Florence Welch?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Her record is consistently on the right side, and the only gap is that the sources I could open on the good works are thinner than for the big names.
Florence Welch is the London-born lead singer of Florence and the Machine, the band that broke through with the 2009 album Lungs. Over the years she has racked up a string of albums and a Grammy nomination for What Kind of Man. The sixth album, Everybody Scream, landed on Halloween 2025.
Her recent work is a who's who of artists with no harm attached to their names in anything I read. For Everybody Scream she worked with Aaron Dessner, Idles guitarist Mark Bowen, Mitski and producer James Ford. She also says Nick Cave has been a kind mentor, and that Taylor Swift invited her onto Florida!!!
On the harm test, the record is good. At a 2019 Orlando show she dedicated a cover to the city's LGBTQ+ community, pulled a rainbow flag from the crowd and told the room the ACLU was on site to speak with anyone, trans fans included. She also told the crowd they must “believe and trust in women”.
In April 2026 she took that further, partnering with Planned Parenthood so its tables appeared at stops on the Everybody Scream tour. She called its health centres “a lifeline for millions of people” and said she was proud to support it. Conservative outlets objected to the partnership, so where you land on it depends on your view of abortion access, but on this page's harm test it counts as backing women's health.
On how she treats people, the stories are small but telling. In 2012 she stopped a show in Aberdeen when two fans were arguing, scolded the crowd, then hopped off stage barefoot to hug one who looked upset. Searches for lawsuits, court outcomes and credible allegations against her came back empty, which is a rarer result than you would think.
The good stuff is real if not flashy. In 2020 she released an unreleased track, Light of Love, and gave her income from it to the Intensive Care Society's COVID-19 fund. She said it was never more important to keep an open heart. Those are the acts I could confirm; the record is honestly thinner on long-run charity work than for some stars.
