Do we like Florence Pugh?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Her record is clean on harm and she backs causes publicly, but the record on LGBTQ+ issues specifically is thin, so it stops short of the top marks.
Florence Pugh grew up in Oxford with a restaurateur dad and a dance-teacher mum, and she was more into performing and music than school. At 17 she landed a role in The Falling off an open audition, and that was the start of it.
The road wasn't straight. An American TV pilot didn't get picked up, she moved to Los Angeles, and Lady Macbeth in 2016 revived her love of acting and won her a British Independent Film Award. Then came Midsommar, Little Women (an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress), Black Widow, Don't Worry Darling and Oppenheimer.
The harm check first. We found no harmful words or acts from her on trans people, women, migrants or the planet, and her recent work is the big stuff: Marvel, Dune and the Netflix series East of Eden, which she also produces. We didn't find her speaking on LGBTQ+ issues either way, so that's a gap rather than a tick.
Her most visible cause is Palestine. In September 2025 she made a surprise appearance at the Together for Palestine fundraiser, saying silence in the face of such suffering is not neutrality, and she told Vanity Fair in 2026 that nobody on her team told her to stay quiet. Where you land on it depends on whether you read it as humanitarian advocacy or as taking a side in a bitter conflict, but she said it with her own name and she says it has cost her followers.
The recent bit: on 28 September 2026 she posted a long Instagram message about the alleged Cornell fraternity assault case, saying she felt sick and was now enraged, and calling on men to speak up. The allegations in the former student's lawsuit have not been proven in court, and the local district attorney says he will take the case to a grand jury. It is the kind of post that costs a famous person something, and she made it anyway.
On set, she told Vanity Fair she doesn't like messy sets and wants people to come to work and enjoy the luxury of it. The one cloud is the old Don't Worry Darling saga: an alleged screaming match with director Olivia Wilde was reported in 2022 via an anonymous source, and Wilde told The Cut in June 2026 that it never happened. Forty crew members also disputed the reports, so it stays gossip rather than a finding against Pugh.
