Do we like Erica Stanford?

Our score: 6 out of 10. A capable minister with no campaign against any group in her own words, held back by the scrapped guidelines, the spam remark and a few messy moments.

Stanford didn't come up through the usual political pipeline. She spent years producing reality TV, including TV3's Noise Control and scriptwriting on Piha Rescue, and once had a gun pointed at her and her crew while filming. In 2013 she joined Murray McCully's electorate office, then won his East Coast Bays seat in 2017 when he retired.

Her messiest stoush started in May 2025, when she told Parliament she regarded unsolicited emails from people in India seeking immigration advice as “akin to spam”. The New Zealand Indian Central Association's president called the comment ill-mannered, dismissive and inappropriate, and Luxon said she could have put it better. She later said she regretted it, though she did not formally apologise, and she kept her line that unsolicited overseas visa and job requests are spam.

Then there's the House. In November 2024 Labour's Jan Tinetti alleged Stanford had muttered an insulting remark at her, which the microphone didn't catch. Stanford's office said it was a private comment to a colleague after a heated exchange, and she withdrew and apologised in the House and to Tinetti directly. Separately, in May 2025 she admitted forwarding official briefings to her personal email, which Labour's Chris Hipkins said had “absolutely no justification”. Luxon said he was very relaxed about it.

On the harm check, the record is thin on her own words. I found no speeches or posts from her against LGBTQ+ people. But as Education Minister she led a government that scrapped the gender and sexuality education guidelines in June 2024. The April 2025 draft replacement had few mentions of gender or gender identities, though Stanford says consent and healthy relationships must stay. Some schools reportedly stopped teaching the topic altogether in the gap. Add the India email remark and you get an asterisk, not a fail.

The latest mess is on the immigration side. In June 2026 a report found staff tried to hide blowouts on a border biometrics upgrade from her and Cabinet, and she says she was misled. The project started at about $19 million, ballooned and was scrapped with at least $32 million written off. Meanwhile National's polling slump has her name floated as a Luxon replacement, which she dismissed in March as “reporters interviewing their typewriters”.

The good stuff is mostly policy rather than personal kindness. She has driven a push for structured literacy and a knowledge-rich curriculum, saying she would “retire a very happy politician” if it takes off in every school. Whether it works is for the teachers and the test scores to settle, and her critics say the changes came too fast. I couldn't find charity work or personal acts of kindness, so that's honestly the whole list.
