Do we like Eric Bana?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record with years of charity work, held back from higher only because the sources I could verify were few.
Bana started out as a comic and made his name in sketch comedy before moving into drama. He told Variety he was “quite burnt out of comedy” by the time he made the switch. That is a bloke who knew when to change lanes, and the career since has been drama after drama.
His recent work is mainstream. He starred in Netflix's Untamed, playing an investigator in Yosemite, and told Variety he “attached myself immediately” to the character. He also joined Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton in the Netflix thriller Apex, which began shooting in Sydney in early 2025.
On the harm check, I went looking for anything he has said or done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, public health or the planet, and found nothing. No slide into conspiracy theories, no culture-war grifting, and no pattern of working with people who push that stuff. His recent projects are big-streamer productions with no red flags. A clean sheet is not the same as a loud ally, and I could not find a public statement either way.
On scandals, I found no court cases against him and no allegations in the outlets I checked. Gossip sites are full of death hoaxes, break-up stories and Bond rumours about him, and some of those sites flag their own stories as false. That is tabloid territory, and I've left it out.
The good stuff is real. He has been an ambassador for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets since 2004, the charity for homeless young people. In 2019 he made the Queen's Birthday Honours list for service to the performing arts and charitable organisations. His own reaction was that he had never aspired to it, and that it felt “more like something that's for the whole family”.
When the Gippsland bushfires hit in early 2020, he voiced a run of radio and TV ads for the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund, pro bono. The campaign had raised more than $1 million by the time Mumbrella reported on it. It is a small act, but it is the kind of showing up that costs a busy actor his time.
