Do we like Emilia Clarke?

Our score: 8 out of 10. We found no harmful words or acts, a lot of real good through her charity, and only one contested role; the record on trans issues is thin.

Emilia Clarke was born in London in 1986 and raised in the Oxfordshire countryside. She trained at Drama Centre London, graduating in 2009, then did the usual slog of day jobs, small TV parts and ads. Then came the call about an audition for a new HBO fantasy series, and she was cast as Daenerys Targaryen after the first actor in the role left following the unaired pilot.

Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons and made her a household name. She followed it with Me Before You, Terminator Genisys, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Last Christmas, plus a Broadway debut in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Not everything landed, and she has been cheerfully honest about it. In a May 2026 interview she joked about the cool reception to some of her franchise work, and said she had been livid about how Daenerys's story ended.

The harm check comes up clean. We found nothing from her that targets LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, people of colour, public health or the planet. We found no vaccine or climate-denial claims and no culture-war grifting. Her recent work is mainstream: Peacock, HBO, Marvel, Amazon. We didn't find her making projects with anyone known for pushing harm. To be fair, the record on trans issues is thin, because we found nothing either way.

The recent stoush was a minor one. In January, online commenters were angry about a Ponies clip in which her character speaks Russian and swears, and some read it as Western TV glamorising Russia during the war on Ukraine. The report we read quotes anonymous social media users and no official, and it carried no response from her. The show is set in 1977 Moscow, and Peacock cancelled it in June after one season, with Deadline reporting that viewership was too low.

On set, she has said she was pressured over nudity on Game of Thrones. She told the Armchair Expert podcast in 2019 that she had fights about keeping the sheet up. That is her own account of standing her ground, and it shows she was willing to push back. Separately, a 2021 lawsuit she filed alleged that a magazine let a cosmetics brand use her shoot photos without permission. We found no outcome in what we read, so the claim is hers and is unproven.

The good stuff is real. She co-founded SameYou in 2019, a charity that backs people recovering from brain injury and now has a community of tens of thousands of survivors. She and her mother were made MBEs by Prince William for it, and she said the honour was for the cause and the charity. That is a platform used for other people, and it has run for years.
