Do we like Eluned Morgan?

Our score: 7 out of 10. No harmful words or campaigns turned up, and one small, minor rules slip; the record we could read is thin.

Eluned Morgan made history in August 2024 when she became Wales's first female First Minister, taking over the Welsh Labour leadership. She came to the job as a long-time Labour figure who had been health minister before stepping up to the top job.

Her time at the top ended badly. At the May 2026 Senedd election she lost her own seat in Ceredigion Penfro, the first time a sitting Welsh leader has lost an election in the Senedd, and she stepped down as Welsh Labour leader that day. She said she took responsibility for the result and urged Starmer's government to change course.

The run-up wasn't smooth either. In February 2026 she was criticised for her silence on whether Keir Starmer should stay as Prime Minister, which kept the Labour leadership question hanging over her own campaign. It's a political stoush rather than a moral one, but it shows how tangled she was in Westminster's troubles.

The one rules slip on her record came in 2025. The Senedd standards commissioner found she should have declared her union membership, and a £3,500 sponsorship from Unite, in a debate about the Port Talbot steelworks. The standards committee recommended no further action, and she said she should have declared it out loud in the heat of the moment.

On the harm test, we found no harmful words or campaigns from her. A gender-critical women's group questioned her decision to hire a prominent trans-rights advocate as chief of staff, but that is criticism of the hire, not something she said. We found no direct quote from her on trans issues, and we couldn't open the full articles for this card, so treat it as a lighter check than usual.

So: a decent, pretty low-drama politician who made history, got hammered with her party at the polls and had one small paperwork stumble. Nothing we found says she hurts anyone, but the record we could read is thin, so we say lean yes and not a gushing yes.
