Do we like Elroy Finn?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful or dodgy turned up, but he keeps a low profile and there's too little on record to score higher.
Elroy Finn is the drummer in Crowded House, and he grew up in the family business. He's a New Zealander, a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, and he has toured and recorded with Wild Nothing and Connan Mockasin as well as with his brother Liam Finn.
Growing up with his dad's instruments around him shaped him. He has said he was “obviously surrounded by instruments a lot growing up thanks to my Dad”. He then built his own solo identity, writing, producing, recording and mixing his self-titled debut album, Elroy, himself.
On stage he's part of the six-piece Crowded House line-up with his father Neil and brother Liam. A 2024 Radio New Zealand review of the Wellington show on the Gravity Stairs tour says he steps out from behind the kit for acoustic guitar and vocals on a couple of songs. That's a drummer with more than one string to his bow.
We also found no court rulings, lawsuits or allegations against him, and no reporting of mistreating band-mates, staff or fans. Searches for his name mostly return other people called Finn, which tells you how quietly he goes about things. Nothing is recent either: we found no news from the last few months to hang a story on.
The good stuff is thin on the record. We found no charity work, awards or causes reported for him specifically, so we won't pad it. What fans and reviewers do point to is a solid drummer and a decent multi-instrumentalist who has made his own album on his own terms.
So would we support him? Yes, comfortably, with the caveat that we're judging a man who says very little publicly. If he starts speaking up on the things that matter to this page, we'll know more.
