Do we like Elisabeth Moss?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and no harmful words of her own turned up, with one contested position: her public defence of Scientology.

Most people know Moss as the face of The Handmaid's Tale. Her 2018 Golden Globe win for playing Offred is where this story really starts: she accepted by reading from Margaret Atwood's novel and dedicating the award to women writing their own story.

That speech copped a pile-on from people pointing at her Scientology. Fox News reported she was accused of being a hypocrite, and Stylist noted the church has faced accusations of homophobia and of retaliating against critics. Leah Remini, a former Scientologist, has said Moss “believes that she can't talk to me”.

Here's the harm check. Asked in 2019 about the church's views on LGBTQ people, Moss dodged the question, but Fox reported she made clear she personally supports LGBTQ rights. In 2022 she called Scientology “misunderstood” and urged people to learn about it themselves. Faith alone is never a fail here; where you land depends on whether you read that as loyalty to a private religion or as backing an organisation its critics accuse of harm.

The Remini stoush is the sharpest bit of goss. Moss denied leaving a 2017 awards event to dodge Remini's speech (“I went to the bathroom”) and said the church had never asked her not to speak to her. Separately, Valerie Haney, who sued Scientology in 2019 alleging she was held against her will, nominated Moss as her arbitrator; the church's justice chief wrote that Moss declined, and no statement from Moss appeared. Those allegations are against the church, not her.

On recent work there's not much drama. A March 2026 report said she'd lead and executive produce Conviction, a Hulu legal series. A few content-farm pages claim scandals this year, but nothing checked out with a reliable outlet, so that's honestly the whole list.

The good stuff is real if modest. She has used big platforms to back women speaking out, and no court case against her turned up. Her charity record is thin in what we could verify, so we won't pad it.
