Do we like Dominique Crenn?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent record on people, workers and the planet, with plenty of real good, but the staff-treatment evidence is thinner than the advocacy.

Crenn grew up in Brittany with a painter-and-politician father, and by nine she had taken over the family kitchen. French culinary schools reportedly told her she might not be suitable, so she skipped them and moved to San Francisco in her twenties. She worked at Campton Place and under Jeremiah Tower at Stars.

Atelier Crenn opened in 2011 as a tribute to her father, with a tasting menu presented as a poem. She won World's Best Female Chef in 2016, then in 2018 became the first woman in the US to earn three Michelin stars. Petit Crenn and Bar Crenn followed, along with a lot of firsts.

On the harm test, the record is a good one. She speaks publicly on Black Lives Matter, gay rights, reproductive rights, women's rights and workers' rights, and backed a campaign for a US$15 federal minimum wage for restaurant workers. In 2019 she took land-animal meat off all her menus, saying “Meat is insanely complicated.” I found no harmful words, and no work with people who push harm.

She's also been blunt about the industry's #MeToo moment. She told NPR she won't excuse chefs accused of sexual violence, thinks bystanders share responsibility, and added “we are all complicit”. She calls herself a little fish in the sea, but says her actions can still make a difference.

The good-person side is the practical stuff. In 2020 she turned Petit Crenn into a community kitchen, rehired staff with a grant, and cooked vegetarian meals distributed through Glide to food-insecure San Franciscans. She also led a World Central Kitchen fundraiser for Ukraine, per a search listing I couldn't open in full.

On the court record and allegations, there's honestly nothing. Searches turned up no lawsuits, convictions or credible misconduct claims against her, only an old blog making wild claims that no mainstream outlet backs, so I've ignored it. The caveat is that most of what we know about her kitchen culture comes from her own interviews, not independent staff reporting.
