Do we like Dominic Perrottet?
Our score: 5 out of 10. The record we could confirm is mixed on LGBTQ+ issues and the decent bits are thin, so the middle it is.
Dominic Perrottet became NSW Premier in October 2021, after Gladys Berejiklian's shock exit. He won a Liberal party room ballot in a landslide, 39 votes to Rob Stokes' five, and at 39 he was the youngest premier the state had had. He led the Coalition until it lost the March 2023 election.
His biggest personal stoush came in January 2023, when he revealed he'd worn a Nazi uniform to his 21st birthday party. He apologised publicly, called it a grave mistake and said he was deeply ashamed. Political rivals were accused of knowing about it for some time, which he disputed.
The Jewish Board of Deputies said it appreciated him personally reaching out to the community with what it called deep and sincere regret. That counts, but an apology is only as good as what follows it, and the reporting we could read shows no repeat of the behaviour.
On LGBTQ+ issues he was slow to move. In February 2023 he initially wouldn't say whether he'd back a ban on gay conversion practices, then came out in support of banning the harmful ones. Other reporting shows him drawing fire from LGBTQ+ groups over his comments on trans people and sport, but we couldn't open those articles in time, so we don't rest any judgement on them.
Honest gap: this search ran into limits and several key pages wouldn't load. That left the voting record, any fact-check scorecard and the good-works side thin. He has also moved on from state politics, but we couldn't verify the details of that here, so we haven't built anything on it.
So where does that leave us? He's not a culture-war grifter on what we confirmed, and he owned his biggest mistake. But the early reluctance on conversion practices and the fights with LGBTQ+ advocates mean we can't give him a clean pass.
