Do we like Denzel Washington?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Decades of steady good work and no harmful words found, but the record on climate and migration is thin, so it stops short of a 9.
Denzel Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1954. He came up through New York theatre, including the Shakespeare festival, then landed a role on St. Elsewhere. Cry Freedom and a run of 1990s films like Malcolm X and Philadelphia made him a leading man.
The formative thing was the Boys & Girls Club in his home town. He has said it shaped him, and he has kept coming back to raise money and awareness for it for years. That is the through-line of his off-screen story, more than any trophy.
The trophies are real, though. He won Best Supporting Actor for Glory and Best Actor for Training Day, and he also directed Antwone Fisher. In May 2025 Cannes surprised him with an honorary Palme d'Or before the premiere of Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest.
On the harm check, we found nothing nasty in his own words or acts. When he said a same-sex kiss in Gladiator II was cut and the filmmakers had 'got chicken', that read as a shrug at the squeamishness, not a dig at anyone. He has also told Complex he doesn't chase approval or follow anybody. His recent collaborators are mainstream directors such as Lee, Ridley Scott and Netflix's Fernando Meirelles, with nobody in the culture-war grift crowd. The gap is that he rarely talks climate, migration or trans rights, so there is not much to score either way.
The messiest thing on record is the 2025 Cannes red carpet, where a photographer touched his arm and Washington shouted at him to stop. Variety reported the video, and the photographer appeared to laugh it off. It is a flash of temper at a pushy stranger, not a pattern of mistreating people.
The latest drama is not of his making. Trump reposted a screenshot of a post attributing praise to Washington, and the Washington Post reported that the quote was made up. His publicist reportedly said it was not real. Being falsely roped into someone's political pitch is not a mark against him. He hasn't said anything about it that we found.
