Do we like David Schwimmer?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Nothing harmful from him turned up, and he has used his fame to push back on hate, with one stoush over Friends criticism keeping it from a 9.
Schwimmer's family moved to Los Angeles when he was two, and he started acting at Beverly Hills High School. At Northwestern he studied theatre and speech, graduating in 1988, then co-founded the Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago. So before he was a sitcom face, he was a theatre kid building a company.
In 1994 he became the first actor cast in Friends, and Ross ran for ten seasons. He was later nominated for an Emmy for playing Robert Kardashian in the O.J. Simpson miniseries. He has also directed features, including Run Fatboy Run and Trust, so he's more than a one-role bloke.
Harm check first: nothing nasty from him turned up in the reporting. When Friends came under fire in 2020, he said the show was groundbreaking for its time and pointed to the pilot's storyline of a wife leaving him for a woman. He also said he was aware of the lack of diversity and had campaigned for Ross to date women of colour. Some people found his tone dismissive (he said he didn't care about the criticism), which is the one blemish here.
The recent stoush is about Ye. In April, as sponsors fled London's Wireless Festival, Schwimmer posted on Instagram thanking them and urging the rest to follow. He called Ye's apology words on paper and said forgiveness needed more, like meeting Jewish leaders. He wrote that Ye should not be granted a platform until trust was rebuilt.
He did the same in 2025 at the ADL's Never Is Now summit, telling Hollywood to speak out against antisemitism. He said nobody was asking anyone to solve the Middle East, only to stand with Jewish friends and neighbours against hatred. He also said that speaking out often comes at a cost, and that he has been threatened or abandoned over it.
We found no court losses, no allegations of mistreating colleagues and no slide into conspiracy theories. That's thin on drama, but it's a clean sheet. He keeps showing up for causes at some risk to himself.
