Do we like Dannii Minogue?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A long record of backing LGBTQ+ people and charities, with one old on-air remark she apologised for and a feud or two.
Dannii Minogue is Kylie's younger sister who made her own name as a pop singer and telly personality, and spent years as a judge on The X Factor in Britain. Over the last two decades, though, the thing she's best known for among our crowd is turning up for queer people when it wasn't the safe commercial move.
Her low point on that front came in 2009. On live X Factor she made a remark about contestant Danyl Johnson's sexuality, which drew thousands of complaints to Ofcom. She apologised, saying they'd been joking in rehearsals, and Ofcom later cleared her. Johnson has since said he forgave her, though in 2024 he still joked there was no gayer way to be outed on telly than by a Minogue. That's a real stain, but it's one moment, and it was followed by years of changed behaviour.
The harm check comes up clean. We found no comments from her against trans people, women, migrants or the planet, and no vaccine or conspiracy rabbit holes. She has said she was warned she'd lose her career for being an LGBTQ+ ally, and carried on anyway. When far-right party the BNP used her comments to claim she backed their policies, an Irish Examiner headline says she hit back. We couldn't open that article, so take it as a lead rather than gospel.
The good stuff is long and specific. She was the Terrence Higgins Trust's ambassador for young people and joined a Downing Street reception for the charity in 2007. More recently she has hosted the BBC's I Kissed a Boy and I Kissed a Girl, and PinkNews reports all profits from the shows' theme song went to LGBT Switchboard. Some fans unfollowed her over the gay dating show, and she stuck with it.
She also had to correct the record on her own life in 2024, saying she's straight and in a long-term relationship after reports she'd come out as queer. That's her setting the facts straight rather than a scandal, and it shows she's happy to be an ally without claiming a label.
Her old interview about Russell Brand resurfaced in 2023 when women made serious allegations about him, which he denies. That's a story about him, not her. The only ongoing grumbles about her are the Sharon Osbourne feud from X Factor days, which is messy and mutual. We couldn't open every page to verify everything, so the court and allegations boxes are empty, and nothing in the search results pointed to a case against her.
