Do we like Daniel Kaluuya?
Our score: 8 out of 10. No harmful words or acts found, and real youth work, but the record on LGBTQ+ and wider causes is thin.
Kaluuya grew up on a Camden Town council estate with his Ugandan-born mum. Teachers saw a restless kid, and she enrolled him in acting classes to keep him on track. He told the Camden New Journal she got him into it “to get me off the streets”.
The arc from there is a ripper. He wrote a play at nine that was staged at Hampstead Theatre, broke through on Skins as a teenager, then hit Black Mirror and Get Out. He has said he nearly walked away from the industry before Jordan Peele called. He won a BAFTA Rising Star award for Get Out and an Oscar in 2021 for Judas and the Black Messiah.
On the harm test, we found nothing nasty. We found no hateful posts, no culture-war grievance, no conspiracy stuff and no dodgy collaborators. He has spoken about Black British experience, but he also said “I'm not a spokesperson; I'm an individual.” To be straight, searches turned up nothing from him on trans rights or the climate either way, so this is a pass on a quiet record, not a loud one.
The only real gossip is from 2022, when Page Six reportedly said he'd handed his career to a self-styled “life strategist” and let his agents go. That's tabloid territory: the report relied on anonymous sources, and the woman named denied it. The article we read carried no response from him. Nothing in it points to mistreating anyone.
The recent news is a comeback. The Independent reports he's been off screen since Nope in 2022, with the first Misty Green trailer out this July. His next film is an A24 thriller, Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel, and he's slated to voice Spider-Punk again. Nothing in the co-stars or studios raises a flag.
The real good stuff is Centre 59. It's a youth theatre he founded at Camden's Roundhouse for 13 to 25-year-olds, with sessions capped at £2 an hour. He called it a way to “pay forward” what he got as a kid in the same drama classes. That's putting your fame back into the neighbourhood that made you.
