Do we like Dai Le?
Our score: 3 out of 10. trans and LGBTI protections count against her, the votes on housing, TAFE and renewables count for her, and the file is thin.
Straight up, here's the limit of this card. The news pages we tried to open were blocked during research, so what follows rests on one source: her parliamentary voting record, from the House's own division records. That tells us what she did, not why, and it can't tell us what she's like in person. Nothing new on her turned up lately that we could confirm.
On LGBTI and trans issues the record is not good. They Vote For You says she consistently voted against transgender rights and protections, and against increasing legal protections for LGBTI people, including removing religious-school exemptions. She also almost always voted against increasing workplace protections for women, agreeing only 8 per cent of the time. We found no speeches or campaigns of her own, so these are votes, not words.
The rest of the harm check is mixed. She consistently voted against criminalising hate speech that calls for violence and against criminalising hate symbols such as Nazi symbols. She also consistently voted against implementing the refugee and anti-torture conventions, and against net zero by 2035. On climate she's not all one way: she consistently voted for more investment in renewable energy and generally voted for the Paris Agreement.
She has also backed transparency and scrutiny. She consistently voted for more transparency from big business, more political transparency and more oversight of intelligence services and police. She also almost always voted to protect whistleblowers. The odd one is that she consistently voted against restricting political donations, which sits oddly beside her votes for transparency.
