Do we like Zomato (Eternal)?
Food delivery app in India, run by listed parent Eternal, which also owns Blinkit, District and Hyperpure. Based in Gurugram.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's a big, well-run business, but it's in a long tax fight and has been criticised over delivery rider pay and conditions. We'd be wary.
Zomato is the Gurugram food delivery app. In February 2025 its listed parent was renamed Eternal. The Zomato name stayed on the app, and the group now also covers Blinkit, District and Hyperpure.
Founder Deepinder Goyal stepped down as Eternal's group CEO from February 1, 2026. Blinkit's Albinder Dhindsa took over and Goyal stayed on the board as Vice Chairman. His stated reason was wanting to pursue high-risk ideas outside a public company.
The big drama is tax. GST investigators issued a Rs 402 crore notice in Dec 2023, and later a Rs 803 crore demand including interest and penalty, over GST on delivery fees. Zomato says the riders provide the delivery, not the company, so it isn't liable.
Goyal has also faced criticism over rider earnings and working conditions, especially with ultra-fast delivery promises. He replied that average earnings were Rs 102 an hour in 2025, excluding tips. We'd call it mixed: a useful service with unresolved questions about rider pay and tax.
