Do we like [yellow tail]?

Mass-market Australian wine brand made by Casella Family Brands, based in Yenda, NSW, and sold worldwide.

Our score: 6 out of 10. A big, family-run brand with real sustainability certification and no fines found. Alcohol and a thin record on workers keep us from backing it fully.

[yellow tail] launched in 2001 from the Casella family's winery in Australia and became one of the best-known wine brands in the world. Co-founder Maria Casella died in 2014. The family still owns the business, now called Casella Family Brands.

Trade press reports Casella Family Brands fell into a loss in 2024/25. In 2019 it confirmed outside interest in its wine business but denied a sale was in the works. It is refreshing the label design across all markets.

The good bit: trade outlets report its Riverina, Barossa, Rutherglen and Glenrowan operations are now certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, starting with the 2025 vintage. It also joined the Sustainable Wine Roundtable.

Drama so far is mild. Decanter reported Casella sued Bronco Wine Company over its square-bracket Down Under label, a trademark fight. The Drinks Business covered counterfeit bottles, where the company was the victim. We found no fines. Our score is middling.
