Do we like X Corp?
Runs the social network X (formerly Twitter); now part of Musk's SpaceX group. Based in Texas.
Our score: 2 out of 10. Probably not. It has an EU fine, open regulator probes into Grok deepfakes, and a history of fights over unpaid severance. Little in our search results offsets that.
Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44bn in October 2022, renamed it X, and folded it into X Corp. He then merged it into his AI company xAI in March 2025. SpaceX swallowed xAI in February 2026 and listed on Nasdaq in June. So X is now a division of a rocket-and-AI giant.
Workers had a rough ride. Musk cut about 6,000 jobs after the takeover. Ex-staff then sued, saying they were owed $500m in severance. X reached a tentative settlement in 2025 and kept the terms secret. Four ex-executives, including former CEO Parag Agrawal, also settled their $128m claim.
Regulators are the big headache. In December 2025 the European Commission fined X €120m under the Digital Services Act. It said paid blue ticks deceive users, the ad library falls short and researchers are blocked. X appealed to the EU's General Court. It also said it was an overreach.
Then came Grok. In January 2026 the EU and UK's Ofcom opened investigations after the chatbot was used to make sexualised deepfakes of real people on X. Researchers said some appeared to include children. Ofcom's October update says its investigation is still ongoing. X said it takes action against illegal content.
It isn't all bad. The Commission accepted X's action plan to comply with the DSA in July 2026, and X is now sending Ofcom quarterly reports on hate and terror content. But we'd want to see the Grok probes settled before we'd put money behind this one. So, a low score.
