Do we like WordPress (Automattic)?

Automattic runs WordPress.com, WooCommerce and Tumblr, and backs the open-source WordPress software. Based in the US, with a remote workforc

Our score: 4 out of 10. WordPress is a useful public good, but the WP Engine fight and repeated layoffs make us wary. We'd back it only with caution.

Automattic is the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce and Tumblr, led by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg. It sits close to the open-source WordPress project, which is why its fights get so much attention.

The big drama is with hosting rival WP Engine. In December 2024 a California federal judge ordered Automattic to stop blocking WP Engine from WordPress.org resources. She said Mullenweg's conduct appeared designed to induce breach or disruption. That was a preliminary order, not a final verdict.

In 2025 the court let most of WP Engine's claims go ahead against both Automattic and Mullenweg, though Automattic kept its counterclaims alive too. Automattic says it will prevail at trial.

On staff, Automattic cut about 16% of its workforce in April 2025. In October 2026 TechCrunch reported new layoffs following board upheaval and executive departures, with insiders expecting more cuts. That's a shaky picture, so we score it low.
