Do we like Woodside Energy?
Oil and LNG producer, based in Perth, Australia; major projects include North West Shelf, Scarborough and Louisiana LNG.
Our score: 3 out of 10. We wouldn't back them. They're a big fossil gas expander, with the North West Shelf running to 2070 and new LNG projects, and their climate claims were challenged in court.
Woodside is Australia's biggest oil and gas company, based in Perth. It is listed on the ASX and NYSE. Liz Westcott was appointed CEO and Managing Director in March 2026, after Meg O'Neill left to lead BP.
The federal government gave final environmental approval to extend the North West Shelf LNG plant to 2070. Woodside says this gives certainty. It also opens the way for its giant Browse gas project to feed the plant.
Greenpeace sued in December 2023, accusing Woodside of misleading the public about its emissions cuts and net-zero plan. Woodside said the claims had no merit. In 2026 the case was dismissed by consent, with each side paying its own costs. It wasn't a ruling on the merits.
In a separate case, a court found no legal error in the regulator's approval of the Scarborough environmental plan. Scarborough is reported to be about 98% complete, with first LNG targeted for Q4 2026. Louisiana LNG is aimed at 2029. That is a lot of new fossil gas, so we score them low.
