Do we like United Airlines?
Major US airline flying passengers and cargo worldwide; based in Chicago, Illinois.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, well-run airline with a record of customer-service fines and scandals. We'd call it a mixed bag, not a backing-with-heart pick.
United is one of America's biggest airlines, run by CEO Scott Kirby. In April 2026 Fortune and others reported he approached American Airlines about a merger. American's leadership wasn't on board, and talks ended.
Its past has some bruises. In 2021 the US Department of Transportation fined it $1.9 million over long tarmac delays, in a settlement. Earlier, in 2013, it was fined $350,000 over refund problems.
Then there was the 2017 passenger-dragging scandal. The DOT decided not to fine United for it, and United settled with the passenger, Dr. Dao, out of court.
Our score is a middle 5. It's a strong business with a patchy service record, and our searches turned up little on its pay, climate or tax record to lift it higher.
